Album Review: The Family Rain – Under The Volcano

The point of this album for these three bearded brothers from Bath was to ‘make rock and roll exciting again’ and boy do they deliver on that promise.

Opening on a string of singles that have excited fans both live and on iPods in the previous months, the album begins on a fervent, excitable note. Songs such as ‘Carnival‘ and ‘Feel Better (FRANK)‘ boil with urgency and flaunt the boys’ ability to make rock songs pop with feeling; lyrically it really is quite a compulsive lyric as the Walters have the power to bewitch you when they chant “It’s supposed to make me feel better!”.

But amongst the meaty and sweaty guitar riffs (damn good ones though they are) there are moments where their tone becomes a touch more celebratory, adding to that aforementioned excitement of it all. Sure, their heavier moments are full of energy and can make your blood speed up almost imminently, but on tracks such as ‘Binocular‘ and album closer ‘All The Best‘ you can see that these guys want to instil emotions within the listener as well as making them go crazy at live shows.

Still, it’s completely evident on their debut that live shows is where they’re on fine form and after hearing this you will be desperate to catch them on stage soon. They just know how to make a rock and roll song swagger and it all adds up to an incredibly cool rock and roll album.

Maybe they’re not the most groundbreaking act of the past twelve months, but this is one stellar debut album. And it sounds as if, thankfully, they’ve got a lot more in them to keep them going.
