Album Review: David Gray – Mutineers

After 4 years of silence, David Gray is back with a new album entitled ‘Mutineers’, and it’s very vintage Gray…

The lyrics are as poetic as you would expect from the writer of songs such as ‘Babylon‘. With a similar sound to ‘Life in Slow Motion’, the lyrics well thought out, the melody relaxing and what you expect from the Welshman. His advantage over similar artists like Ben Howard is his experience and he uses every year of that experience in Mutineers, employing ghostly minimalism and shows the impact an incredible voice and haunting lyrics can have.

Back in The World‘ is the opener, and starts with “Everyday when I open my eyes now it feels like a Saturday. Taking down from the shelf all the parts of me that I packed away.” He references the feeling of being in love to having a similar feeling to being back in the world again. The title song from the album, ‘Mutineers‘, with its slightly upbeat piano platform and lyrics, its the song that I can see getting the most radio airtime.

Overall, it’s a quality album with songs that fans of David Gray will enjoy. It is, however, just that. There’s no sense that he’s tried to gain a new fan base, and some could argue that on his tenth studio album there is no need to experiment with sound. Fair.

A very enjoyable listen.
