Album Review: CHVRCHES – The Bones of What You Believe

For the past fifteen or so months, CHVRCHES have been buzzed about non-stop. Ever since their first single, Lies, premiered in May 2012, CHVRCHES have rocketed into each and every spotlight possible and have topped Hype Machine numerous times.

But now with the release of their debut full-length album, The Bones of What You Believe, it’s pretty clear that these three should be topping some album charts.

Opening with the almost ethereal, ritualistic (their name is pronounced ‘churches’ after all) heart-pounding hit, The Mother We Share, CHVRCHES prove that they’re no amateurs when it comes to making a pop song. Their songs are crafted with such precision that every glittering synth, backing vocal or pounding beat at the forefront has space to shine in its own right, but never fails to all come together to make you realise that these are great pop songs.

Thematically, The Bones of What You Believe, shows off each and every side of this trio. The sassy, snarling, aforementioned Lies is loud, proud and packs a punch while Tether displays a more tender, sensitive and vulnerable side but does not fail to be memorable, especially with an exceptional synth breakdown at the end that will be sure to have hands in the air at live performances.

What’s so marvellous about this debut record, is that it doesn’t pander to tick all the boxes that make a supposed brilliant album. It does what CHVRCHES do, and what CHVRCHES do is damn well impressive.

Sometimes the hype is justified.
