53 and Out: Augsburg End Bayern’s Record Run

Bayern Munich’s hopes of an invincible season have come to an end with defeat at the hands of mid-table FC Augsburg.

In what has been a record breaking season for Bayern, having set records for the earliest a team has won the Bundesliga title, longest undefeated run and most points in the first half of the season; becoming the first German team to achieve an unbeaten season would have been the icing on an already glorious cake for Pep Guardiola.

The Munich side fielded a weakened 11 with most of their big names missing with Wednesday’s Champions League second leg with Manchester United in mind. Sascha Molders scored the only goal in the 31st minute, slotting the ball past Manuel Neuer, which consigned the German champions to their first defeat since October 2012, when they lost 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen for the first time in 23 years.

This defeat was Bayern’s third defeat this season in all competitions. The first being against Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup and the other defeat coming against Manchester City in the group stages of the Champions League where they lost 3-2.

Manchester United will be hoping to make it four defeats as they travel to Munich on Wednesday night in their Champions League quarter-final tie.
