London collective Wounded Lovers have released their eclectic, indie-tinged debut single ‘A Bar Called Paradise’.
Having cut his teeth in the 90’s playing in various bands, frontman Iain Fenwick met a plethora of musicians and artists along the way. Pulling on his extensive contact list, the songwriter formed The Moriartys, later merging into Wounded Lovers in 2010. The bands wide-ranging influences, and opinionated nature, have often caused internal conflict in regards to their artistic direction. Nevertheless, the differences of opinion are the crux of what make Wounded Lovers the band they are today.
This is perfectly encapsulated by debut single ‘A Bar Called Paradise’. Telling the story of a shooting in a bar with youthful revellers innocently caught up in the tragedy, ‘A Bar Called Paradise’ straddles the line between raucous indie and soulful beauty. The call and response between Fenwick’s gruff delivery and the silky, emotive vocal of Lucca Mae, is superbly balanced. Mae offers a serenity of youth and happiness, before the sound of scratchy guitars, pounding drums and furious vocals unleash the image terror unfolding in front of our eyes.
The track is taken from debut album West End Intoxica which explores concepts of mortality, youth and the lure of the big City. The record includes a swathe of guests who have contributed to an album that defies genre. Wounded Lovers will also support the release of the record with an appearance at High Tide Festival on 27th July.
‘A Bar Called Paradise’ is out now and is taken from West End Intoxica, out on 25th July.
