Following up on the success of his 2019 single ‘One Day’, Abu is back with a brand new track – ‘Ordinary’.
Simplicity has always been an understated and underrated skill when it comes to writing music. While Bob Dylan may have perfected it years ago, few have successfully followed the path of creating songs that impressively lack over-production or a “big sound”.
Equipping just a guitar and his vocal chords, Abu is bringing us a new single in the form of ‘Ordinary’, a cold yet endearing tune that doesn’t stray too far from the aforementioned simplicity. This song is reminiscent of the stunning Lumineers’ track ‘Slow It Down’, in that it doesn’t ever truly reach that larger-than-life feel, but remains familiar and relatable in its quieter, more subtle tones.
This seems to be Abu’s mantra – telling stories is his focus, he’s not looking for a well-polished sound or an anthemic feel. ‘Ordinary’ serves to tell us his story, and servers as a beautiful, gentle yet gripping, introduction to his world.
It comes as no surprise to learn that Abu is no stranger to the music industry. Serving as an artist manager, booking manager and even a roadie has given him the time and tools to fully realise his vision. Having carefully shaped his sound over the years, I feel as though ‘Ordinary’ is his best yet and, hopefully, a launching pad for greater things to come from the singer-songwriter.
With a full-length album under his belt alongside many single releases, now is the perfect time to jump on board and watch this young man’s star rise.
