Single Review: We Are All Fossils – Rapture

South African Indie-folk artist We Are All Fossils has just released his new single Rapture. The atmospheric track follows the release of 2024 single Hollow which has so far received over 300k streams on Spotify.

Rapture is characterized by its plucky guitars which lend the track a sense of the ethereal. Deist Oelofse’s vocals are smooth and calming and evoke the feeling of a warm embrace on a chilly day. Electronic elements swell in the background, providing an extra layer and depth to the guitar strums. The sweeping harmonies sound almost choral, another nod to the divine and the theme of higher power in the track. Rapture is about Oelofse’s choice to embrace change and time spent in the Lake District provided lyrical inspiration which has been captured in poignant verses such as “Have I lost the rapture if I lost the hope? I’m finding it hard to really know what’s going to happen. I’m scared to know. I’m finding it hard.” The track has folk influences at its heart but the ambient edge really sets it apart, making We Are All Fossils one to watch in 2025.

When speaking of Rapture, Deist Oelofse said “Rapture captures the journey of breaking free from numbness and embracing change. Inspired by mornings in the Lake District, the song reflects on nature’s resilience – how it adapts to shifting conditions, no matter how harsh. This sparked a personal reckoning with my own resistance to change and the impact it’s had over time.”

We Are All Fossils is the musical brainchild of Deist Oelofse. The South African-born singer-songwriter grew up in Durban and blends folk influences and ambient elements to create a unique soundscape as a background upon which to share his storytelling. Previous albums The Optimist (2018) and Songs For Strangers (2019) have garnered Oelofse a foothold on the folk scene and Rapture is sure to build on that success. We Are All Fossils recently performed at the legendary Maida Vale Studios for the BBC which is a milestone for the band.
