Single Review: Liam Mera Kai – I Wander

South London-based rising artist Liam Mera Kai has just released his newest single I Wander. The singer-songwriter and rapper fuses together alt hip-hop, neo-soul and R&B, creating a soundscape that is multi-dimensional and containing many layers to peel away.

I Wander begins with a gentle opening of guitar plucks which then give way to the R&B-infused baseline that breaks through like the sunrise at the dawn of a new day. We’re introduced to Mera Kai’s rapping style which is restrained and eloquent and melds perfectly with the pared back beat. He excels at rapping and singing equally and his transition between the two as the chorus approaches couldn’t be smoother. It’s a track about finding your path in life and there’s a lot of wisdom to be found in Mera Kai’s lyrics when he raps: “Life is deep, you know mistakes I’ve made and failure seen but I’d still fail them again cos I ain’t failing at me.” The accompaniment on the track builds as the track progresses, incorporating electronic elements and even some trumpet flourishes as we reach the instrumental outro, the chorus of “I still wander, wonder if I’m doing it right, doing it right” ringing in our ears long after the final beat.

When speaking of I Wander Mera Kai said “So often we’re questioning if we’re where we want to be. If we’re in the right job or living in the right city. Allowing yourself to ‘wander’ is the most important piece of advice I’ve ever received. The main focus of the track is the contradiction and wordplay in the hook – ‘I wander…wonder if I’m doing it right’. The idea of wandering is sporadic, messy and to be honest, pretty overwhelming. Yet, I’d argue that it’s also necessary. You’re allowed to feel lost. You’re allowed to explore things. You’re allowed to spend some time figuring it out. You’re allowed to wander.”

Growing up in South London, Mera Kai’s expressive lyrics are shaped by his experiences in his youth, and his talent has been honed, ready for him to make his mark on the contemporary music scene as his sound crosses a blend of genres. Thought-provoking lyrics which explore love, overthinking and doubt are what characterise a Mera Kai track and he cites Loyle Carner, Bakar and Paulo Nutini as influences. I Wander follows 2024 single Wishbone and 2023 single The View. The debut EP It’s Fine Once You’re In is coming soon.
