Single Review: Hazlett – tell me something

Sweden-based, Australian-born rising singer-songwriter Hazlett has released his newest single, tell me something. The track is the lead single from his forthcoming album last night you said you missed me which is set for release on 12th September.

tell me something opens with a steady stomping beat before airy guitars are layered over the percussion. Heavy reverb and Americana influences cut through the heart of the track which is wistful and gorgeously atmospheric. Hazlett’s unmistakable vocal soothes and sweeps you along with the melody. The chorus of “So won’t you tell me something, something I won’t believe. Heaven knows I need nothing, I heard nothing won’t leave. But I want it back and I want it bad” grabs you with its powerful rawness. A song about navigating the emotions that swell up to the surface once a relationship has reached its end, the track is incredibly evocative and the heartbreak behind the lyrics undeniably palpable.

When speaking of tell me something, Hazlett said “If you’re lucky enough to find someone to throw your whole self into, nobody warns you about the untangling that happens if it ends. The daily things you leaned on them for are no longer around and it feels like the pillow’s missing from under your head. There comes a time when I think holding on isn’t doing anyone any favours. That doesn’t mean those feelings need to turn into anger or disdain, but you might have to swallow that bitter pill that what once was might never be again—and that’s okay. Keep the fond memories, keep the good times, but turn the engine over and see where the road trip to moving on takes you.”

Hazlett’s received praise from NME, Clash and The Line of Best Fit and has opened shows for LANY, Calum Scott, Passenger and Ocie Elliott. His debut album Bloom Mountain was released in 2023 and received positive support from The Line of Best Fit and Atwood Magazine.

Hazlett’s summer schedule is jam-packed with North American and European festival appearances, including stops at Outside Festival (Denver, CO), Bourbon and Beyond (Louisville, KY), Iron Blossom Music Festival (Richmond, VA), All Things Go (Columbia, MD), Golden Leaves Festival (Darmstadt, Germany), Langs Akerselva (Oslo, Norway), and BST Hyde Park (London, UK) where he will support Noah Kahan on Sunday 6th July.
