Rising folk artist Amelia Coburn has returned with her new single Something Wild. The new track follows previous release Le Fabuleux Destin de Sandra, a touching single inspired by the elderly lady who Coburn stayed with while she was working in Paris during her time studying languages.
Something Wild is folk-influenced and the pulsating drum beat and invigorating strings draw in the listener right from the off. Coburn’s angelic vocal is gentle as the track opens but you mustn’t underestimate the power ready to be unleashed. There’s a thrillingly dark edge to the track which is itching to be set free at the chorus, like the “howling creature” Coburn sings of. Coburn’s northern lilt and perfect enunciation is endearing and juxtaposes beautifully when she launches into the high notes. The piercing strings lend an otherworldly edge and coupled with the soaring vocals, combines into a show stopping crescendo.
When speaking of Something Wild and its accompanying Little Red Riding Hood-inspired video Coburn said: “The women in the fairy tales I grew up reading and loving were quite often populated with damsels in distress running away from danger or waiting to be rescued. I wanted to flip that narrative on its head. The protagonist sheds the skin of domestic life, bares her teeth and becomes the very same wolf that the old fables warned us about.”
Coburn has previously supported The Levellers, Katherine Priddy, Hamish Hawk and Stornoway, as well as playing her first ever American shows at SXSW earlier this year. Her debut album Between the moon and the Milkman (2024) received critical praise and airplay from BBC Radio 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6Music among others.
