Broken Jaw is the debut EP from Birmingham based pop punk outfit Light You Up. With catchy choruses, catchy melodic guitar riffs and raw but soothing vocals from frontman Tom Napier this EP shows that these boys have real talent and could easily become a success.
Opening track and lead single from the EP “Foxfire” is a fantastic opener. With energetic but not aggressive guitar riffs and one of the catchiest choruses you’re likely to hear from something that doesn’t embarrass you to admit to listen to starts the release off very well.
Title track “Broken Jaw” continues on with the energy and catchy lyrics from the opening track but does well to not sound repetitive or bore you. Opening line “I’ve never felt this way before” could be the way we all start feeling about Light You Up if they continue on the path they have set upon on with this EP.
Third track “Without You Here” does well to really make vocalist Tom Napier vocals really stand out and sets us up perfectly for the stand out track on the EP closing song “Lifebox”.
Starting off acoustically Napier’s vocals really make the track brilliant. Before we get comfortable with just the acoustic guitar the drums start getting pounded, the catchy guitar riffs that really make the EP great return and gang vocals to really treat us and finish off the EP in style.
Light You Up do a fantastic job in having a modern pop punk sound but putting their own twist on it to separate them from the generic, mediocre sounds that other bands in the genre have fallen into.
The sheer quality of the EP really shows why the band has had support slots with the likes of The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Yashin, A Loss For Words and Set Your Goals among a whole host of other bands.
After just finishing a tour with Decade and a slot at Radstock festival with the likes of The Blackout and We Are The Ocean, 2013 is going to be a big year for Light You Up.
