Live Review: The Feeling- O2 Academy, Bristol- 30/10/13

To be honest with you; I had no idea The Feeling were still going. Since the days of ‘Love it When You Call’ I thought they had just fallen off the radar…

However, after remembering some of their songs, which were huge back in the day, I thought it could be fun to go and see what they had to offer.

They only had one support band on the tour; Yellowire. A fairly unknown band too, so I was unsure what to expect from them, but I was pleasantly surprised. I think the best way to describe their sound is a cross between Travis and Athlete with a hint of Coldplay. At the start of their set it was evident that a majority of the crowd had no idea who they were, as everyone just stood still. After a couple of songs the crowd did begin to move though, and some even attempted singing along occasionally.

Onto the main event, The Feeling took the stage after a rather lengthy interlude. They opened their set with track one ‘Blue Murder’ from their latest album ‘Boy Cried Wolf’. For the duration of the song the room totally lacked any atmosphere, not only did the crowd look bored but the band did too. This soon changed as they went straight into ‘Fill My Little World’, the crowd started dancing, arms waving and the band started moving.

From then on, The Feeling played a fantastic show. They played another ten songs; a mixture of some of their most well-known songs and some from the new album. Front man, Dan Gillespie Sells, gave a brilliant performance, quite dramatic at times, but brilliant none the less. The lighting was superb too, each song magnificently paired with different colours and effects to compliment the mood and tempo.

Now I need to mention the encore, it was phenomenal. At any normal gig the band will come back on stage and perform about three songs then leave. The Feeling took a totally different approach, they decided to perform a medley of “some of their favourite songs from the last 40 years.” They kicked it off with ‘Day Tripper’ by the Beatles, which led flawlessly into the Kinks ‘You Really Got Me’, ‘Pinball Wizard’ by the Who, Pink Floyd ‘The Wall’, Queen ‘Under Pressure’ and finally ‘Park Life’ by Blur. (Just to note the keyboard player, Ciaran Jeremiah, did the cockney bit.)

Overall; a great gig, a good support band, an excellent main performance ended with a superb encore.
