With casino gaming being a staple pastime for many years now, it’s no wonder that certain players have risen through the ranks and made a name for themselves on and off the casino scene.

There’s a whole host of ways to play nowadays, such as live casino games of all of your much-loved classics, so you won’t be short of opportunities to make your mark on the casino world.

Want a bit of inspiration? Read on as we tell you about some of the best and most successful players in casino gaming history – whether that be via wins or techniques.

Phil Ivey

With 10 World Series of Poker bracelets under his belt – or on his arm – it’s no surprise that Phil Ivey is regarded to be one of the best Poker players in all the world. Ivey started his history of wins with Baccarat, although his techniques were questioned, as the casino in question were quick to come down on him for allegedly “edge sorting”. Again, although not illegal, a lot of casinos prefer players to play out their games fair and square, and leave it all to chance. After all, it’s more fun that way!

Chris Moneymaker

Now, if you’re a fan of Poker then you’ll most definitely have heard of Chris Moneymaker. Although he was admittedly not the best player in the world, Mr. Moneymaker put his name on the casino map after his unprecedented victory in the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event – having being the first to earn entry from an online Poker tournament – and continued to reap success in following competitions.

Starting out as an unknown accountant from Tennessee, Moneymaker’s relentless wins gave hope to amateur players around the world – showing that you didn’t have to come from a casino background to end up bagging a big win. In fact, Moneymaker’s success saw a rise in memberships to online Poker sites – talk about free promotion!

Edward Thorp

In 1962, a maths professor called Edward Thorp wrote and published a book on card counting – entitled Beat the Dealer – which was the first dedicated piece of work which gave a mathematical demonstration on how you can beat the house edge in a game of Blackjack, namely by tracking the ratio of high cards to low cards that are known to be left in the deck.

Card counting is a widely frowned upon practice, although not illegal. To combat this, when Thorp would try out his self-proclaimed techniques, he’d use disguises to try and prevent casinos from kicking him out, due to this unorthodox playing practices. We don’t recommend it, ourselves!

Don Johnson

Known as perhaps one of the greatest Blackjack players in casino history, Don Johnson managed to win over $15 million between three Atlantic City casinos between 2011 and 2012. This feat made history, and it’s often noted that Johnson achieved all of this without card counting. He did, however, use other techniques, such as insisting on a house edge of just 0.26%. Nowadays, these negotiations wouldn’t be possible, as casinos have progressed and become more sophisticated, whilst learning not to lean so far in the players’ favour.

Gambling can be addictive, please play responsibly.
